MID SEA DRAMA - UNLOADING VEHICLE |

Ambulance provided by UNICEF : Its real Drama :
I was informed one fine day that UNICEF is sending 1 ambulance for "better medical coverage". The news came as a surprise to me because I already had a brand new Ambulance of the same type and it was an idiotic idea to send 1 more vehicle when they were absolutely clear that the total road length left after Tsunami is just 7 (seven) kms !!!. NGO's sent lots of such useless materials like odomos creams (thousands of them ... which the tribals made sure they will never apply !) , water testing kits (when water source is itself was improper !), god the list is endless ....You see... all MONEY and ? SERVICE !.
The Jetty at Katchal is vanished on the Day of 26th Dec 2004. The disappearance is complete without any traces of the debris, since then supply of essential goods is erratic. The Ambulance arrived by a cargo ship M.V. Tarakiran already loaded with construction materials and was anchored mid sea. Its really an unique experience to see the vehicle being lifted up in the mid sea and
transferred to the pantoon (pantoon is a hollow floating docking station made of iron). Any wrong move while
transferring would have left us with no vehicle (its mid sea what will happen ?). Even with all precautions the vehicle suffered little damages : A big dent on the front near the left wheel , broken parking lights and yes lots of coal tar stains !. That instantly explained the mystery why every vehicle at Katchal is having dents!. Most interestingly the 2 ton heavy pantoon is towed by a small fishing boat to the shores. Its worth mentioning that a local contractor Mr. Muruganandam helped me out with his resources (boat,
labourers, driver) to unload the vehicle. My peers were least bothered and they expected me to pay for the unloading. Talks with UNICEF
yielded no results either. As I mentioned before should anyone waste money on unwanted objects ?

Journey to Katchal
| | Pantoon being towed That's the pantoon being towed by a small mechanized fishing boat. |
| | | Lifted by crane The crane of ship is connected to a jute mesh and then lifted. Additional gunny bags are fixed as supports at corners to minimize the dents. |
| | | Its Risky The waves and weather is observed to make sure things are stable at sea. Any wrong move by the crane operator or helping labourers would disturb the balance and the vehicle will be all gone into the sea ! |
| | | Its unloaded .. |
| | | Vehicle being towed back to shore. .... |
| | | Now its 2 vehicles. Look again .... the Magical equations at katchal : One doctor, 2 Tata Sumo Jeeps, 1 Hero Honda splendor motorcycle, 1857 population, 7 kilometers of total road distance! and worst of all No hospital building even after one year of Tsunami. |
